i first want to go to erin mcpike, in kansas city. erin, how are things looking out there? >> reporter: actually, brooke, the storm has stopped and the roads are actually clear. and i want to show you this. we're actually at the time where we can see lovely sludge, yuck. so that -- that means it is time for the cleanup to start and kansas city's mayor estimates with last week's snowstorm cost the city about $2 million. they think that this week's snowstorm will cost just a little bit more because it is heavier snow, and that means more trees have come down. but by and large, brooke, people we have talked to here are actually very happy about this snowstorm because this is really dry, this area here. it is the third consecutive year of a drought. and this snowstorm has brought much needed moisture, brooke. >> okay, so we have some sludge and moisture in kansas city. thank you, erin. ted rowlands, to you in chicago. never fun. cancellations, flights at o'hare. tell me, give it to me straight, what is the current situation? >> reporter: 230 flights, that's straight up, brooke.

let's begin with erin in the nation's heartland, good morning, erin, it looks terrible. >> reporter: good morning, carol. we're getting about two inches of snow an hour, but what i want to tell you are the power outages. we talked to kansas city power and light all morning and the power outages have doubled and tripled since we first started talking to them, up to 35,000 power outages just in the kansas city metro area. there are also about 10,000 power outages in texas and another 10,000 or so in oklahoma. that's a problem for those getting heat so that's something to watch out for. also around me it's getting harder to see if you can look a little bit behind me here you don't see very many cars on the road. however the cars that we have seen have gotten stuck, one of them rolled down the hill so it is very dangerous. we also know from kansas governor sam brownback that there was a second death in this storm reported last night. so dangerous storm, carol. >> hopefully people are staying off the roads today. thanks so much, erin. let's get the latest on the storm and where it's headi

we start with you erin, it stopped snowing for a little while at least right? >> reporter: it looks like it has stopped, yes, however, the governor of kansas, sam brownback did declare a state of emergency here because we have seen a lot of snow pile up in the last four hours or so. we've got somewhere between 6 to 8 inches. if you can check out over here a little bit, obviously you can't see the road but also we've seen snowplows go by all morning long eight to ten times making a median, big eepz of snow theheae middle, a huge mess. carol one of the interesting things about this snowstorm is that it's thunder snow, we have some video from earlier this morning of lightning and thunder with that snow. we'll play that here for a second. i guess you can see it. and because of this snow, so much of the state is shut down today, most of the universities are closed, lots of public schools, the government, for the most part, is shut down so we want to see people stay off the roads today and stay home and play, carol. >> that is so strange to listen to it thundering wh
